Thomas Franklin Zimmerman
Thomas Franklin Zimmerman, 76, of Ravine passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, July 27, 2023
Born in Ravine December 10, 1946. He was the son of the late Franklin and Irene Wenrich Zimmerman. Tom was a 1964 graduate of Pine Grove High School. He was a Vietnam war veteran who defended his country honorably in the Navy Construction Battalion during the Vietnam Tet offensive January 1967 for 10 months. He was stationed in Danang and retired from military service, October 1968. He then attended Central Technical Institute in Kansas City, Missouri where he received data processing training after which he worked for PA Department of Transportation in IT until 1969. Between 1969 and 1976, Tom operated his own coal mine and began working as a heavy equipment operator. In 1977, Tom started his own business, TFZ Excavating, Inc. He worked as a contractor to many of the largest residential builders in the Harrisburg area for the next 35 years.
Tom and his wife Eileen loved spending countless hours together on their property, watching the beautiful nature all around them - the birds, flowers and wildlife, and especially the butterflies covering their blooming butterfly bushes. Their dogs would join them there, playing, resting, and chasing bubbles.
Tom was a member of St Paul’s Church of Christ, Ravine, a life member of the Pine Grove Veterans of a foreign war club, Pine Grove American Legion, and a supporter of various veterans help organizations. Tom had a huge heart when it came to dogs in need and was a long-time supporter of Above & Beyond English Setter Rescue where he adopted seven needy pups including his most-loved Amos.
Surviving are his wife, the former Eileen Gibson, Ravine, a son Jeffrey Zimmerman, Cumbola, a sister Carole wife of Floyd Schwartz, Virginia, one nephew and four nieces, a brother-in-law, Donald Gill. Preceding him in death was his sister, Judith Gill.
All services will be held later, at the convenience of the family.
The family would prefer, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either the Above & Beyond English Setter Rescue, www.esrescue.org, 2415 Wynnefield Drive, Havertown, Pa., 19083 or to the Ruth Steinert SPCA, 18 Wertz Drive, Pine Grove, Pa. 17963, in his memory.
