Born on December 29, 1948 in Pottsville, he was a son of the late Robert "Hank" and Clara Marie Kline Haldeman.

He was a 1966 graduate of Pine Grove Area High School.

After graduating, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving from June 1966 to February 1972.  He served overseas during the Vietnam War and was a member of the Delta Co. 1st Battalion 5th Marines.
