Joan M. Schwer
November 18, 2022
Joan M. Schwer, 85, of Long Stretch Rd, Pine Grove died peacefully on Friday, November 18, 2022 at Providence Place in Pottsville.
Born on May 6, 1937 in Pottsville, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret Hoke Allison.
She spent her early years in Pottsville, later graduated from Pine Grove High School in 1955 and then completed business school.
Joan was employed for over 33 years at Ft. Indiantown Gap as a transportation and travel office clerk. After retirement in 1989, Joan and her husband traveled the world.
Joans real passion in life was animals, especially dogs and cats. Along with her many dogs throughout her lifetime, she raised several puppies for the Leader Dogs for the Blind, as well as three litters of puppies for the Leader Dog program. She also raised money through various nonprofit organizations and secondhand stores to pay for spaying and neutering of dogs and cats.
Joan enjoyed staying busy so she never had a free moment. She spent her leisure time traveling, socializing, dancing, shopping, and maintaining her yard. While in retirement, she worked at Hess Catering, cleaned for the AmVets, presented product demos at various stores, and worked the polls during election season. She also was afforded the time to develop her enthusiasm for writing while learning how to use a computer instead of a typewriter. Joan was a newspaper correspondent for various local papers reporting on community meetings and local events.
She also enjoyed spending time with her grandsons by exploring various Pennsylvania events and activities. She was always a smart dresser, very organized, a future planner, and enjoyed her sweets. While Joan was frugal throughout her years, she was exceptionally charitable.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband of almost 39 years, Frederick O. Schwer; and three brothers, Franklin J., Cyril W., and Robert J. Allison.
She is survived by her daughter Alyson and husband Steven Gioia and 2 grandsons, Peter and Alexander Gioia, all of Mullica Hill, NJ.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at Noon at the H.L. Snyder Funeral Home, Inc Pine Grove with Fr. George Kochuparambil officiating. There will be a viewing on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 from 11:00 am until Noon at the Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
