Darlene Grindle Obituary

Darlene Grindle
June 26, 2024

Darlene (Dolly) Hope Morgan Wolfe Grindle, 91, passed away at Calvary Hospital, Bronx, NY, on June 26, 2024 of natural causes.  She was the daughter of John Morgan of Pine Grove and Jennie (Wolfe) Morgan of Lebanon.  Darlene was born January 21, 1933 at the Hope Rescue Mission in Reading, grew up in Lebanon, served two years in Germany in the US Army, lived in Los Angeles for one year, New York City for 20 years, and Columbia PA for 40 years.  Dolly spent her final two years living back in NYC with her son and his family.

Darlene is survived by her son James G. Medrano, his wife Nancee, their daughters Rebecca and Emily, and by her daughter Jennifer J. Price, her husband Troy, their children Cassandra, Cynthia, and Connor, and four great-grandchildren Mason, “C.J.”, Annalena and Raelynn.  She is preceded in death by her mother, Jennie, her sisters Betty and June, and her adoptive sisters, Jane, Ruth, and Kathryn.

After graduating from high school in Lebanon, Dolly wrapped Hershey’s chocolates, was a nurse’s aide in the Army, a nightclub hostess in Los Angeles and New York, and in Columbia was a toymaker for Playskool, a cashier for Texaco, and an office temp, before retiring in 1995.  Darlene studied nursing at Walter Reed MC (Maryland), art at the School of Visual Arts (NY), and business at the Consolidated School of Business (Lancaster).

Darlene was an artist, loved to draw and paint, and was an avid photographer, creating and sharing many beautiful albums.  She enjoyed listening to George Beverly Shea and Johnny Cash and playing hymns on her organ.  She wrote sonnets, kept diaries for 50 years, and was a faithful letter writer.  She loved reading her Bible, novels, and poetry (Emily Dickinson, Edna St Vincent Millay).  She loved to play games and do jigsaw puzzles, and she loved animals, from her first dog Piper to her kitty cats Bronx and Franco.  Darlene especially loved her children, her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Darlene’s life will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday July 27th at the H.L.
