Alfred Amos Snyder, age 92, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 9, 2024. He was surrounded by his loving family in his final days.
Alfred was born in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania on May 5, 1932, to the late Andrew J. Sr. and Dillie Savilla Snyder. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his eleven brothers and sisters, William McKinley, Daniel Samuel, Henry Franklin, Luther Sterling, Isabella Irene Snyder Corcoran, Sarah Ann Snyder Ferrebee, Andrew Joseph, Jr., Emma Ellen Snyder Shastay, Arthur Edward, Paul Alvin, and Leonard David. He was also preceded in death by his grandson, Duane Hayes, and great grandson, Chase Solomon.
He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-six years, Shirley Miller Snyder of the home; daughters Ginny Hayes (Mike) of Clarkton, NC, Barbara Quinn (Tim) of Zebulon, NC, Linda Markham (Doyle) of Vass, NC, and son David Snyder (Yalonda) of Deland, FL; his many precious grandchildren and great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Alfred graduated from Cressona High School. After growing up on the family farm, he joined the Army and proudly served his country as an Encryption Specialist where he earned the Army of Occupation Medal Germany and the National Defense Service Medal. Following his military service, he attended Penn State University earning his Civil Engineering degree and worked for the US Department of Agriculture helping to design dykes and damns. His job carried him to North Carolina, but he later returned to the farm homestead to enjoy the place he loved the most. He was honored to receive a Century Farm certificate on behalf of the family homestead.
In addition to spending time with his loving family, Alfred loved working on the farm using his Case International tractor and lawn mowers. He also had a passion for keeping his data current on both his computer and paper files. Even in his last weeks of illness, he talked about and continued to be concerned about maintaining all of his work. All his family enjoyed spending time with him on the family farm and helping to maintain it.
Alfred’s gentle demeanor, sense of humor, and love for his family will be greatly missed by many. May he continue to ride his Case International taking care of his new farmland.
