     Richard "Dick" E. Van Doren, age 89, formerly of Hertford, NC, passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2018 in Providence Place Assisted Living, Pine Grove, Pa.  Mr. Van Doren was born on July 10, 1928 in Princeton NJ., and was the son of the late Robert and Ruth Fagan Van Doren.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 46 years, Joan Jardine Van Doren, two brothers-in-law, Jack Ross and Donald Jardine; two sons-in-law, Charles Shimski and William Hinkson. 
     Surviving are two daughters, Suellen Shimski of Knoxville TN, and Karen Hinkson of Rocky Hill NJ;  three sons, Robert Norman, Jr. of Doylestown, PA, Gary Norman and wife Michele of Sneads Ferry, NC and David Van Doren and wife MaryAnne of Hopewell, NJ; sister, Ruth Ross of Valencia, PA; sisters-in-law, Ellen Contino and husband Louis of Wayne, NJ and Janice Jardine of San Rafale, CA; 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.  
     Dick graduated from Drexel University, Phila. PA in 1950 with a Degree in Engineering.  He also played Varsity Football there.  He spent most of his professional career in Engineering and Management positions in the field of Telemetry and Data Acquisition used to test Automobiles, Aircraft, Spacecraft and Weapons.  His work required considerable Domestic and International Travel.  He was a member of the Society of Flight Test Engineers (SFTE) and an active participant in the International Telemetry Conference (ITC) and European Telemetry Conferences (ETC d ETTC).
     Dick was a member of the New Jersey School Board Association (NJSBA) and was elected as "Man of the Year" in 1966 by the Hopewell Jay-Cees for his efforts getting organized and approval for the Hopewell Valley Regional School District in Mercer County, NJ.
     Dick was Assistant Fire Chief in Hopewell, NJ from 1955 to 1962.  His father was a member of the Lawrenceville, NJ Fire Dept. His son, David was Chief of the Hopewell, NJ Fire Dept. and his grandsons, David, Jr. and Andrew are members. 
     He and Joan were active Sail and Power Boaters, primarily in the Barnegat Bay, NJ, and the Chesapeake Bay, MD.  He was elected Commodore of the Windjammers Sailing Club, Bayville, NJ in 1989. 
     He and Joan were also members of the Hertford Baptist Church, Hertford, NC. 
      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hertford Baptist Church, PO Box 34, Hertford, NC 27944 or to your favorite Charity in his memory. 
      Services will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
